Mentors: Teachers
Do you have a favorite teacher? Someone who spent extra time with you in class to make sure you did well on that important test? Have you ever thought about becoming a teacher someday yourself?
Teachers play an important role in helping children develop both their intellectual and social skills during their early years. The education that teachers share plays a key role in determining the future success of their students. Whether in preschools or high schools or in private or public schools, teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop into responsible adults.
In addition to being knowledgeable about the subjects they teach, teachers must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand the students' educational and emotional needs. Teachers must be able to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and employ different teaching methods that will result in higher student achievement. They should be organized, dependable, patient, and creative. Teachers also must be able to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents, and members of the community.
Within the next ten years, job opportunities will vary from good to excellent, depending on the location, grade, and subject taught. If you want to be a teacher, you will need to take college preparation courses in high school, complete a bachelor's degree from a teacher education program and then receive a teaching license.
Teachers can also be great resources when you are in need of help. Should you find yourself in a hardship, don't hesitate to reach out to someone you can trust.
